Red Faction: Guerilla - Preview

Red Faction: Guerilla is the third title in Volition's Red Faction series, set to be released  in June. The series' claim to fame has been the trademark geo-mod technology which  allows for real-time destruction and deformation of the gameplay environment. To date,  no developer has attempted to duplicate this feat - but just executing this gameplay  concept on a next-gen platform wasn't enough for Volition. They are taking a new  approach to many of Red Faction's elements, the least of which is that the game will be  shifting from first person to third person.

This time around players will take on the role of Alec Mason, a former miner now a rebellion fighter against The Earth Defense Force (E.D.F.).  The game is set on mars in the year 2208, roughly 45 years after the events of Red Faction II. E.D.F., the allies in the first installment, is now the main antagonist in Guerrilla. The majority of the game will take place on the terraformed surface of mars. There have been hints that some locations from Red Faction will be reappearing but, at this time little else is know of the games plot.

Multiplayer has been a key focus in the development process and will ship with at least 20 multiplayer maps.  Geo-mod technology allows for a building to be completely torn down and change the multiplayer environment. Backpacks are another change to the game’s multiplayer. Each backpack has its own unique power ranging from flight to juggernaut ability allowing your character to run through walls.  Currently, every time you respawn you randomly get a new backpack with a different power, but the developers said they're still tweaking this aspect of the game.

Volition seems to be reviving the best things about the older Red Faction games, while changing enough so it doesn’t get lost in the sea of shooters. In June, we’ll find out if Red Faction: Guerilla has what it takes to change the playing field.
